THE PLAYBOOK

The Director's Playbook

A community of kindness, love, and peace — donors, volunteers, customers, and the Carmelite Sisters gathered around one purpose: giving donated goods a second life so children with cancer in the Philippines can receive comfort and care.

The Three Intentions

Kindness

Every interaction — with a donor dropping off a box, a customer asking about a listing, a volunteer on their first shift — is an opportunity to be kind. Kindness is the default. It is not earned; it is given.

Kindness looks like:

  • Thank donors who bring unsellable items — don't correct them.
  • Respond to frustrated customers with patience.
  • Write listings honestly so no customer is unpleasantly surprised.

Love

What we do is ultimately an expression of love for children we may never meet. That love shapes how we handle every donated item — as if it were a gift to a specific child — and how we tell our story, with warmth, never guilt.

Love looks like:

  • Handle a donated child's coat as if it's going to a specific child — because it is.
  • Celebrate volunteers publicly and often.
  • Remember the birthdays and life events of regulars.

Peace

Adonais is a peaceful place. The work is steady, not frantic. Disagreements are handled calmly. The atmosphere in the store, on the website, and in our communications should leave people feeling lighter, not heavier.

Peace looks like:

  • Never use guilt, urgency, or fear in marketing.
  • Say 'no' clearly when needed, without drama.
  • Disagreements are handled privately, calmly, and quickly.

The Giving Hierarchy

Adonais believes how people give matters as much as that they give. We ask our community to consider contributing in this order:

1

Donate Items First

Usable goods are the engine of our mission. Every donated item either funds a child's care (through resale) or reaches a child directly. Items turn into impact in a way money alone cannot.

2

Volunteer Your Time Next

Hands-on help sorting, listing, packing, and storytelling multiplies the value of every item. Volunteers let more donations become more impact — and volunteering is how most people become part of the community.

3

Monetary Donations Last

Cash is welcome and useful — but only after the first two options have been considered. We would rather have an afternoon of your time than a check, and rather have a box of your used goods than either. Money is the easiest gift to give; it should also be the last one we ask for.

Core Values

Community

People matter more than items, items more than efficiency.

Dignity

Every item, donor, customer, volunteer, and beneficiary is treated with respect.

Transparency

Our community can always see where items, hours, and money go.

Stewardship

Donated goods are a trust, not inventory. Handle them accordingly.

Efficiency with Heart

Move quickly so help reaches children fast — never at the cost of the three intentions.

DONATE ITEMS

Give Items,
Not Just Money

Have new or gently used items you'd like to contribute? We accept item donations — and they go further than you think.

Donated goods are either sold in our store for proceeds that directly fund care, or packed into a balikbayan box and shipped directly to children and families in the Philippines.

How It Works

1

You donate new or gently used items

Clothing, toys, school supplies, household goods — anything in good condition.

2

We sort and assign

Items are either listed in our store for resale or set aside for direct shipment.

3

Sold or shipped via balikbayan box

Proceeds fund treatment. Physical goods go straight into balikbayan boxes headed to the Philippines.

4

A child's life is touched

100% of value — whether cash or goods — reaches a child in need.

EVERY PURCHASE MATTERS

Shop. Give. Save a Life.

Your purchase today could pay for a child's chemotherapy tomorrow. Browse the store and find something you love — knowing it loves a child back.
